Soils are composed of silts and other sediments with variable amounts of peat and other organic materials and are fairly fertile. Mostly in depressions and bordering rivers and lakes. Flooded most of the year and dominated by bald cypress or pond cypress. Cypress domes and strands reflect differences in soil conditions. Domes form in shallow depressions which may be dry during part of the year. Strands occur along rivers and deeper water. Most accessible areas have been logged out -- those remaining are rapidly being converted into cypress mulch. Plants in the cypress swamp have little salt tolerance.
