Neutral to alkaline soil is composed of coarse sand and shell fragments, has little organic matter content with low fertility and some salt content, and is exceedingly well-drained. Plants are adapted to hot, dry, sunny and windy conditions. Plants are very salt tolerant. Some more tropical species may be frost sensitive.
